Impact of Tea Party Movement felt by Republican Party
August 23, 2010 by Bill Mick · Leave a Comment
I’ve been a Republican my entire voting life. I believe in the principles my father taught me about government, taxes and what government should and, maybe more importantly, should not be doing. There was no doubt that when it came to the two major political parties in the USA that I made the correct selection for my core beliefs. Sadly, not everyone made that distinction when they selected their party affiliation and the Republican Party suffered as a result.
While the party itself still claimed those values and espoused their virtues, the candidates that the party began nominating in primaries were not so closely tied to them. Oh sure, they would talk conservatism on the campaign trail and tout family values and fiscal responsibility. Then they would get elected to office and we found ourselves wondering how government continued to grow apparently unchecked. Something was not quite right. Read more

An Open Letter to the Members of the Brevard Republican Executive Committee (BREC) from Brevard Tea Party Organizer Matt Nye
Dear fellow BREC members,
With the election of a new Chair tomorrow night, we have the opportunity to change both the face and dynamic of the BREC. While I am excited about the election, I have been disappointed by some of the behavior I have witnessed and the logic being employed by many who will be voting.
First, full disclosure: I have only been a registered Republican and active member of the BREC for the last few years. I cannot claim 10 plus years of service like others, but I will let you be the judge as to whether or not I have had an impact in the short time I have been involved. Read more
Brevard Charter Review Commission considers elected Comptroller position
March 2, 2010 by Matthew Nye · 2 Comments
Members of the Brevard County Charter Review Commission (CRC) will be having the final rounds of discussion on an amendment to the County Charter that would give the county an elected comptroller with the authority to audit the Constitutional Officers Thursday night.
Almost half of the Board of County Commissioners’ budget goes to the Constitutional Offices, but the board currently has no authority to perform internal audits of those offices.
Advocates say approval of this amendment would increase transparency between the Board of County Commissioners and the Constitutional Offices and potentially save Brevard County millions of dollars each year. Read more
Brevard Republican Executive Committee votes to support Sharon Day for RPOF Chair
February 12, 2010 by Matthew Nye · Leave a Comment
Members of the Brevard Republican Executive Committee voted overwhelmingly last night to support Sharon Day in her bid for RPOF Chair in a motion to ascertain the “sense of the body”, with only Chairman Jason Steele and a few others voting against. A resolution (pdf) offering a more detailed statement of support for Day failed with just shy of 50% of the votes, however.
Supporter after supporter took the podium to share why they support Sharon Day as the new Chair of the Republican Party of Florida. The recurring theme expressed by committee members was principles over politics, with members pointing to Day’s refusal last year to sign the Rule 11 letter put forth by Jim Greer that would have allowed the RNC to endorse Governor Charlie Crist over rival Marco Rubio for the United States Senate seat being vacated by Mel Martinez as the hallmark of a principled leader. Other supporters pointed to her years of service and experience as a grassroots volunteer. Read more

EDC may escape budget cut
July 31, 2009 by Scott Ellis · Leave a Comment
Although Brevard County faces declining revenue it appears there are three votes to throw away another $1.5 million this year on the Economic Development Council, of the most effective smoke and mirror money machines in recent Brevard County history. Threatened with a miniscule 10% cut, the EDC came out in force throwing a number of stats at the County Commissioners. The EDC created 8,000 jobs, the EDC brought improvement now paying $7 million per year in taxes, and the always faithful, “NOW more than ever!” Yes, your money, their investment.
